The Duo Barrenechea presents a series of concertos, masterclasses and lectures in the US with repertoire of Brazilian Music, including works of the triple triplo "The Flute Music of Francisco Mignone" on September, 2012.

The flute and piano duo presents selected works from Brazilian repertoire, which reflects these musicians’ s long-term partnership in music. Included are well-known important composers from the 19th and 20th centuries and also composers from the following generations. This panorama is intended to offer an opportunity to have a glance of Brazilian musical production for this instrumental combination. The concerts will be presented from September 5th to 16th , 2012. They will also present masterclasses and lectures.

The Duo Barrenechea, formed by flutist Sergio Barrenechea and his wife, the pianist Lucia Barrenechea, has been performing extensively since 1989. The Duo has participated in an array of events such as the Iowa Flute Festival (1997) and the meeting of the Brazilian Music Education Association - ABEM (1995), the International Festivals of Flutists (2000, 2008 and 2011), promoted by the Brazilian Association of Flutists - ABRAF, the 24th Panorama da Música Brasileira Atual-UFRJ (2008), and many editions of the International Music Festival - CIVEBRA (from 2002 to 2011) in Brasilia. The Duo Barrenechea aims to explore a wide repertoire for flute and piano, including the promotion of Brazilian music. They also performed the first auditions of works by Estércio Marquez Cunha, Dawid Korenchendler, Alexandre Lunsqui, Rafael dos Santos, Fernando Morais and composers of "Preludio 21" group. The Duo has also presented chamber music recitals in collaboration with other musicians, such as members of the Quinteto Villa-Lobos and Quinteto Brasilia, and the flutists Rogerio Wolf, Itzzes Gergely and Maurício Freire. In 2009, they played a concert of Brazilian music at the Hanoi Opera House in Vietnam, with colleagues Fernando Silveira, clarinet, and Elione Medeiros, bassoon. The Duo Barrenechea has released, in 2008, the CD “Moments in Paris”, with French repertoire for flute and piano, and participated, in 2010, in the triple CD “The Flute Music of Francisco Mignone”. In 2012, the duo, together with cellist Hugo Pilger, performed a tour of concerts in Portugal and UK to promote the music of Francisco Mignone.

Lúcia Barrenechea currently holds a teaching position at the Instituto Villa-Lobos of the UNIRIO - Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, including research and advising activities at its Graduate Program. She has a BM in piano performance from the Universidade Federal de Goiás, a MM from The Boston University, and a DMA in Piano Performance from the University of Iowa, US.  Ms. Barrenechea acted as soloist and pianist colaborator in various master classes by well-known artists, such as Caio Pagano, Yara Bernette, Homero Magalhães, Joseph Kalischstein, Menahem Pressler, Florence Kirsch, Julius Baker, Carol Wincenc, and others. Ms. Barrenechea has recorded, in 2008, a CD with works for piano trio, with violinist Mariana Salles and cellist Marcelo Salles, released by the label Brasil Meta Cultural. Her first solo album “Saracoteio - Brazilian Piano” has been released, in 2009, by the label Ethos Brasil. She has been featured as soloist with the Orquestra Estadual de São Paulo, under the direction of Eleazar de Carvalho, the Orquestra Filarmonica de Goiás, The Orquestra do Teatro Nacional in Brasilia, under Fabio Mechetti, and the Orquestra Sinfônica de Goiânia, under the direction of Parcival Módolo. She participated as teacher and artist in many music festivals such as Festival Villa-Lobos and Bienal da Música Contemporânea in Rio de Janeiro, CIVEBRA -Brasília, ABRAF´s festivals, Festival Carlos Gomes in Campinas–SP and V International Oboe and Bassoon in São Paulo, among others. In 2002, she performed and presented a paper at the I International Villa-Lobos Conference in Paris.

Sérgio Barrenechea was born in Brasília, Brazil, where he started his musical studies at the Escola de Música de Brasília. He received his BM from the Universidade de Brasília and his MM from The Boston Conservatory. He completed his DMA in Flute Pedagogy and Performance at the University of Iowa in the US, where he had the opportunity to play in masterclasses for Julius Baker, Walfrid Kujala, Carol Wincenc and Keith Underwood. He has been featured as soloist with the La Fosse Baroque Ensemble, the Orquestra Filarmônica de Goiás and the Orquestra Jovem de Brasília. He was principal flute with the Orquestra Filarmônica de Goiás and extra player wth Orquestra do Teatro Nacional in Brasilia, Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra and Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira. He also has been in the faculty of many festivals throughout Brazil such as CIVEBRA (Brasilia´s Music Festival), Festival de Música de Londrina, Festival de Música de Câmara de Caxias do Sul, Inverno Cultural da UFSJ, Festival Eleazar de Carvalho (Fortaleza), Festival de Música de Teresina, Semana da Música de Natal – RN, Festivals of ABRAF (Brazilian Flutists Association), and others. Mr. Barrenechea acts as flutist with the Quinteto Brasília and, since 1989, forms with his wife, the pianist Lúcia Barrenechea, the Duo Barrenechea, developing intense chamber music activities with the flute and piano combination. Mr. Barrenechea recorded the following Cds: “Duo Barrenechea- Moments in Paris” (2008), “Quinteto Brasília – Brincadeira a Cinco” (2009) and the triple Cd “The Flute Music of Francisco Mignone” (2010). He currently holds a teaching position at UNIRIO´s Instituto Villa-Lobos, Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, including research and advising activities at its Graduate Program.
